The ad said they were looking for a live-in caretaker, a handyman, an all-purpose man.

Hopefully they would consider someone just like me. I needed a place to hang my knapsack for a while.

I'd been on the road for six months already, ever since that little bit of trouble I got

myself into in one of those towns where I never should have stopped in the first place.
